The pictures are beautiful and it serves as a nice intro into African culture for small children.
This non fiction story utilizes each letter in the English alphabet to bring up a cultural aspect, object, action that one might see on a trip to Africa. The book provides an opportunity for teachers to introduce African culture to students while teaching/reviewing the alphabet at the same time. The book does a good job of explaining each term so it could also be used to teach new vocabulary to students as well. The terms used in the book range in difficulty so the book could be used to teach ce [...]
1. Genre: International2. Awards: None3. Grade Level: K-2nd4. I would use this book in my classroom to obviously teach my students the alphabet but this book can also be used to introduce my students to the African culture as each letter is about something found in the African Culture. As a follow-up activity, I would have my students draw and color in their own African village and have them incorporate at least 8 of the letters they read about into their village. This would help them gain an ev [...]
This is a great informational book that if (the information is correct) then it is a great book. This book is based on the author's own favorite images of the Africa she knows. The photographs reflect the rich diversity of the continent as a whole. It uses the alphabet to show people and objects in Africa. A good social studies integration would be having students identifying land features of Africa. Display pictures of: mountains, grasslands, rain forest, rive, desert, and lakes. Fold the paper [...]
An OK children's book that teaches about Africa (Nigeria specifically) and the alphabet. It's got interesting tidbits of information, but it doesn't seem especially professionally done - the photos are from the author's travels in the region and the writing isn't really "children's book-esque" but, it's still a children's book about Africa so I enjoyed it. Also learned a couple things!
1. International2. none3. k-24. This book is a great way for young students to learn about African culture. Read aloud to the students to not only help with the alphabet but to learn about a country. Have students draw and adorn an African villager in ways stated in the book.
So good! Amazing photographs.
To use before Things Fall Apart
This book has great pictures. It is a good book for young students to learn the alphabet. It also teaches readers about different cultures and countries in Africa.
By using the alphabet, this book introduces the reader to the life and people in different parts of Africa. Add this book to your multicultural list.
Gorgeous photos of Nigerian people and culture, in the form of an alphabet book. Recommended for children ages 4-8.
An alphabet book where each word relates to daily life/traditions/geography or religion in African culture. Great color photography.
